Preview — Chapter 01: Once Upon a Time

From early on, most people inherit a story about how life is supposed to work. It is rarely questioned because it is everywhere: in family expectations, social milestones, and cultural definitions of success. The story usually promises that if you follow the correct sequence of steps, happiness will arrive as a natural reward. Education leads to opportunity, opportunity leads to stability, stability leads to fulfillment. When life follows this pattern, everything feels on track. When it does not, confusion and self-doubt creep in. These internal stories are powerful because they feel personal, even though they are largely borrowed. They shape how experiences are interpreted in real time. A setback is not just a setback; it becomes evidence that the story is breaking down. A delay becomes a sign of failure. Someone else’s success becomes a reminder that you are behind. The emotional weight does not come from the event itself, but from how badly it seems to fit the imagined script. Much of everyday dissatisfaction comes from living inside a story that no longer matches reality. Yet instead of questioning the story, people often double down on it. They push harder, judge themselves more harshly, and cling to the idea that happiness is just one more achievement away. This creates a cycle where effort increases but satisfaction does not. Comparison quietly intensifies this problem. Observing others who appear to be living the “right” version of life reinforces the belief that there is a correct way to exist. Social narratives amplify this illusion, making it seem as though fulfillment is common and easily attainable for everyone except you. The result is a persistent sense of falling short, even in moments that might otherwise feel complete. Relief begins when these stories are recognized for what they are: interpretations, not truths. Life does not unfold according to a universal script, and fulfillment does not follow a predictable timeline. When the grip of the story loosens, experience becomes less evaluative and more immediate. Moments stop being judged against an imagined future and start being met as they are. This shift does not require abandoning goals or values. It simply asks for flexibility. When life is allowed to unfold without constant narrative judgment, disappointment softens and curiosity returns. There is more room to notice what is actually happening rather than what should be happening. In that space, a calmer and more authentic relationship with life begins to form.
