We spend a huge portion of our lives mentally somewhere else—rehearsing the future, regretting the past, and trying to game happiness before it happens. But most of what we imagine is wrong. Not because we’re bad at thinking—but because our brains evolved to prioritize speed, not accuracy. The journey to “elsewhen” is both a gift and a trap. It helps us grow, plan, and protect—but it also makes us chase illusions. Understanding how this mental travel works is the first step to using it wisely—and not letting it run the show.
