In these spaces, generalists who’ve sampled broadly and delayed specialization often outperform those with early, narrow focus. Instead of racing to the top, generalists wander first. They engage in what’s called “sampling periods” - dabbling across interests, trying different skills, and switching tracks. This path, while messier, allows them to better match their talents to their roles. It also fosters adaptability, creativity, and long-term performance.
