Preview — Chapter 01: The Trance of Unworthiness
Unworthiness isn’t a passing feeling - it’s a trance that shapes how we see ourselves and the world. When caught in it, every experience gets filtered through a lens of self-judgment. A mistake at work becomes proof you’re incompetent. A friend’s silence is interpreted as rejection. Even joy is shadowed by the sense that it won’t last or that you don’t deserve it. The trance keeps us trapped in a cycle where no achievement or love can break the spell, because the belief of inadequacy always lingers in the background. This trance is sustained by two forces: self-criticism and disconnection. The inner critic speaks harshly, echoing voices from the past that told us we weren’t good enough. Disconnection arises because we identify only with our flaws, cutting off awareness of our larger wholeness. Together, they create a prison of shame. Living in this trance, we forget our basic goodness. We become strangers to the boundless awareness and compassion that are our birthright. Yet the trance is not unbreakable. Awareness itself begins to dissolve it. When we pause and notice the harsh inner dialogue, when we bring curiosity instead of condemnation, cracks form in the trance. With mindfulness, we begin to see the stories of unworthiness for what they are: stories, not truth. Compassion further softens the grip, allowing us to embrace the wounded parts rather than exile them. Step by step, we move from imprisonment to presence, from shame to belonging. Awakening from the trance is not about fixing ourselves, but about seeing through the illusion that we were ever broken.
