The best Canadian hockey players aren’t just the most talented. They’re overwhelmingly born in the first few months of the year. Why? Because age cutoffs mean kids born in January are older, bigger, and more physically developed than their peers. These kids get picked for elite teams, receive more coaching, play more games - and the gap grows. This advantage has little to do with innate skill. It’s a matter of being slightly older at the right moment - then benefiting from a system that rewards early performance. As the advantages stack up, the initial edge becomes a chasm. And the world reads the outcome as talent or genius, when it was often timing. This pattern shows up across domains: in academics, sports, and even careers. Small differences in starting conditions - birthdate, access, encouragement - snowball into massive outcome gaps. These invisible forces shape who rises and who doesn’t.
