Out of that era arose a group of physicists who had built reputations during the nuclear arms race and were unwilling to let go of the spotlight. When the military threat faded, they redirected their influence toward political causes. The George C. Marshall Institute became their platform - a think tank that presented itself as a defender of objectivity but operated as an ideological fortress. By aligning with conservative movements, they framed scientific consensus as political bias. Their public messaging turned technical issues - like missile defense or global warming - into debates about freedom versus regulation. The brilliance lay in reframing facts as opinions. They claimed to protect science from politicization while secretly politicizing it themselves. This gave policymakers permission to delay environmental action. Reporters seeking “both sides” amplified their message, unintentionally validating false equivalence. The institute became a model for how to manipulate public perception without presenting new data - only louder doubt.
