Children don’t misbehave because they want to be difficult - they often act out because they don’t know how to name or handle what they feel. Frustration, jealousy, fear, or sadness can feel overwhelming when there's no language or space to process it. And when those feelings are ignored, dismissed, or judged, the behavior only gets louder. The instinct to fix, minimize, or correct a child’s emotion comes from love - but it often leads to disconnection. Phrases like “You’re okay,” or “Don’t be upset” might sound soothing, but they can make a child feel unseen. What they need isn’t explanation or logic. What they need is acknowledgment. When a child says, “I hate my brother,” the goal isn’t to scold or correct - it’s to reflect: “You sound really angry with him.” This kind of mirroring helps children feel understood and safe, which is the first step toward self-regulation. The chapter introduces four tools to help children navigate feelings: Listen with full attention - without interrupting, fixing, or judging. Acknowledge feelings with a word or sound - “Mmm,” “I see,” or “That’s tough.” Give the feeling a name - labeling helps calm the nervous system and gives children emotional vocabulary. Give the child their wishes in fantasy - “I wish I could make that toy appear right now!” These responses don’t eliminate the problem, but they build a bridge - from emotional chaos to emotional clarity. When children feel heard, their tension softens. Their thinking brain turns back on. And they slowly begin to do what we ultimately want them to do: regulate their own feelings, rather than act them out.
